Really, Arizona? Really?

When you were young, didn’t you always think of the (contemporary) United States as being, well….united? I was remembering the awesomeness of ignorant bliss and sugar-coated education, and how I always assumed being an American meant being on the same page about what was good and what was bad, and because of that, I was all about being an American because Americans could do no wrong. I’ll put it this way: In Rocky II, I rooted for Apollo Creed, solely based on his trunks and entrance music. Little did I realize how people in American flag-patterned clothing would send shivers down my spine later on in life…

Rapha + Apolis Activism Transit Elite sweater

In a previous post, tyd.com gave Apolis Activism a bit of flack about what we saw as conspicuous branding, and most of our claims still stand. However, we’re going to give them a second look, because we also more recently posted about Rapha’s upcoming collection, which debuts an impressive looking collaboration piece between the two companies.  This short film explores the vision and process behind the Transit Elite sweater, taking us all the way to Kathmandu, Nepal where the materials are sourced from a womens cooperative.  We’ll be honest, we’re excited for this piece.  Take a look-see.

What is your favorite t-shirt of all time? If you’re anything like us over here at tyd.com, it’s probably something old and tattered, but with so much sentimental value that you’d rather never wear a shirt again than throw it away.  Well, what if you could turn it into something equally as dope, save the environment, protect your new Macbook pro, and feel good about helping former victims of sex-trafficking?  Wait, did you hear that? That’s the sound of knocking out four birds with one very yuppie stone, and you know we’re all about multitasking here. Continue reading

I’ll take mines to go

As much as it shames me, I really can’t deny how susceptible I am to clever marketing.  But if you look past the embarrassment of the disappointment when the ads don’t always deliver, getting sucked in now and again is usually harmless.  Back in high school, the paradisaical image of beautiful 12th grade tarts chasing me down the locker-lined hallways suckered me into buying Axe body spray deodorant far-too-many times.  More recently, I have a friend who swears by the cold-activated blue mountains on Coors light bottles, and after being duped far-too-many times into mistakenly thinking that a beer was cold based on the temperature of the bottle,  I have decided to side with my buddy and conclude that the people at Coors are engineering geniuses.  Child victims of landmine ketchup packets are a bit different though, I must admit.

EYN: World Police

Ladies and businessmen, it is my honor to make the following announcement.  With talks of a troop surge in Afghanistan, growing numbers of militants in Pakistan, and continued ship hijackings, it has become clear that our military is becoming spread quite thin.  Since a draft is clearly out of the question, the government has opted to enlist the premium services of the finest private security in town. So ::ahem:: as General of the Egalitarian Yuppie Militia, it had come to my attention that while we rule the cocktail lounges, organic supermarkets and bicycle paths, we could be doing so much more to keep peace on the high seas.  Thus, it brings me great pleasure to announce to creation of the Egalitarian Yuppie Navy.  From here on in, ransom monies can now be paid using cash, credit, OR PayPal!

2 Wheels, 1 cause

I said it before and I’ll say it again: the bicycle can be, should be, and will be the prefered method of transportation for many types of people, bicycles in africa not just the yuppie.  While it’s surely convenient to be able to bike over to wholefoods (farmers markets are dunzo for the year folks) and pick up some plain yogurt, turkey bacon, wheat grass, or whatever yuppies eat, it is but a small joy in our lives compared to the impact bicycles can make on a lot of communities around the world.   Continue reading

Retail Activism: Yuptopian reality or philanthropic farce?

The Yuppie Dilemma is a very complicated ideological bind, as far as dilemmas go.  When you areAPOLIS-ACTIVISM+FILSON well aware of all the injustice that exploits people across the world, it’s not exactly easy to plunge headfirst into a hedonistic lifestyle of yupdom, and it shouldn’t be.  But as a friend once told me, a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world make it difficult to plan the day.

Then I read about Apolis Activism.  Today’s plan: going shopping.  Problem solved.
